Electrical Engineer

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for assisting the Lead Electrical Engineer with the design and production of drawings, specifications, and reports required by a project and delegated by Lead Electrical Engineer, as well as quality control. The Electrical Engineer is also responsible for staying current with the latest design practices, software and codes affecting design. The Electrical Engineer takes direction from the Lead Electrical Engineer.

  • Executes the project plan for their discipline to achieve project scope, schedule and budget.
  • Complies with approved scope, schedule and budget for designs with the Lead Electrical Engineer. Follows company standards for project and drawing coordination, documenting decisions made during the course of the project.
  • Follows and completes a design control sheet for the following information:
    • Future expansion • Anticipated hours of operation • Occupancy profiles • Power diversity • Power capacity • Backup power or equipment requirements • Equipment selection • Lighting requirements and controls • Utility services required • Client’s special requirements • Metering needs • Site utility information • Code and insurance requirements • Known areas of potential interference • Special systems requirements • System control • specific site requirements • Applicable utility companies • hazardous classification requirements
  • Follows owner's standard details and specifications and design standards. Shares with the project team and incorporates into final design.
  • Designs to meet site utility information/requirements, design conditions, special needs data and coordinates with other outside consultants.
  • Develops construction cost comparison under direction of Lead Electrical Engineer and complies with level of estimate and items to be included per client, project or contract specifications. Assists in the preparation of the final construction cost estimates under the direction of the Lead Electrical Engineer as requested.
  • Monitors budget and progress and notifies Lead Electrical Engineer immediately if design budget or schedule cannot be met, or additional scope items have been identified.
  • Manages project documents per company and discipline standards.
  • Coordinates or performs field investigations following company guidelines.
  • Executes conceptual design consistent with project criteria as directed by the Lead Electrical Engineer for discipline specific items: Electrical distribution equipment and controls • Lighting and controls • Special systems • Fire alarm and security systems.
  • Efficiently utilizes design software whenever possible, provide detailed design of the following items (use company checklists as required):
    • High Voltage – power distribution, substations, transmission
    • Medium Voltage – distribution, switchgears, switch boards, transmission
    • Power Distribution – arc flash, short circuit, overcurrent coordination, load calculations, distribution panel boards, motor control centers, branch circuit panel board distribution, branch circuit design, conductor applications, raceway applications, grounding
    • Motor Control – application, equipment selection, schematic design, VFD PLC,
    • Lighting – calculations/design, control
    • Systems – data/communication/LAN system design, fire alarm design, security system design, CCTV system design, computer room design, lightning protection design
  • Participates in the review of the design with other disciplines for function, clearances, coordination and final design selection.
  • Performs detail design and checks for code compliance, constructability and adherence to Client objectives.
  • Participates in internal and external project meetings as requested and provides information to the project team.
  • Prepares specifications under the direction of the Lead Electrical Engineer incorporating Client and Company standards and coordinated with project drawings.
  • Participates in the quality review of final design drawings and specifications following company processes.
  • Seeks and communicates new ideas to increase efficiency of company processes.
  • Provides input for project team member evaluations.
